Holidays Around the World

Discovery Place Kids Huntersville

World Traditions

December is a month full of celebrations and traditions, not just in the United States but around the world!

Come in to the Museum this month as we us arts and crafts, stories and other fun activities to learn about the way other countries celebrate the holidays.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, explore the history of Christmas Trees as we discover the country of Latvia and make a special craft. On Wednesdays and Fridays, find out what pickles and shoes have to do with Christmas as we learn about Traditions from Around the World.

Ever wonder how animals might celebrate the holidays? Join the festivities in our daily puppet show, Sammy Squirrel's Holiday Party.

Additional activities this month include:

December 10 & 11 - Holidays Around the World: Israel - We’ll be reading The Hanukkah Hop by Erica Silverman and making a fun craft as we learn about Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights.

December 17 & 18 - Holidays Around the World: Mexico - A Mexican legend tells how the poinsettia or “Flor de la Nochebuenao” came to be a holiday symbol. Hear the story and make a beautiful craft to celebrate.

December 21 - Holidays Around the World: Sweden - Santa Lucia Day is a festival of light celebrated in Swedish homes and schools on the Winter Solstice, one of the darkest and shortest days of the year. We'll read Lucia Morning in Sweden by Ewa Rydaker and then make a festive craft.

December 31 - New Year's at Noon - Three, two, one … Happy New Year! Create noise makers and decorations and then gather for a dance party and countdown to the Big Balloon Drop as we ring in the New Year.

Please note: The Museum will be closed December 24 & 25 but will be open Monday, December 28, for even more hands-on fun!
