Learn about the physical properties of Earth’s materials and how they are useful in many different ways. Make sure to wear you safety goggles as we analyze rocks, minerals, soil and water.

Major Concepts to Be Explored:

Students will be able to identify the four types of rocks, determine hardness, and experiment with magnetism.

Essential Standards:

  • K.P.2.1: Classify objects by observable physical properties (including size, color, shape, texture, weight, and flexibility).
  • K.P.2.2: Compare the observable physical properties of different kinds of materials (clay, wood, cloth, paper, etc.).
  • 1E.2.1: Summarize the physical properties of Earth materials, including rocks, minerals, soil and water that make them useful in different ways.
  • 1.E.2.2: Compare the properties of soil samples from different places, relating their capacity to retain water, nourish, and support the growth of certain plants.

Methods and Activities:

Group Discussion, Interactive Centers, Hands-on Experimentation

Key Vocabulary:

Hardness, Absorption, Magnetism, Texture, Weight
