Ready, set, learn: Discovery Place KIDS counts down to a new school year

We are getting ready for a new school year at Discovery Place KIDS! Join us throughout August as we celebrate the last weeks of summer and prepare for a new school year.

Kids can build literacy skills with Story Time tales such as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr., I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont and Rhyming Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, practice your alphabet as we identify letters through stories, games and other activities in Learning Letters. On Wednesdays and Fridays, join us for Shapes & Numbers as we use our counting skills to find circles, triangles and squares.

Be sure to join us Friday, August 19, for Countdown to Kindergarten, a community-wide program for rising kindergarteners and their families. Enjoy FREE Museum admission as community partners offer skill-building activities and information that children and parents will need in preparation for their first day of school.

Additional activities this month include:

  • August 13: Smart with Art - Did you know that meaningful art activities support brain development? Engage all the senses as we make art and develop skills in expression and creation.
  • August 21: Scissor Safety - Learn some valuable tips for becoming skilled with scissors, just in time for the new school year.
  • August 27: 1, 2, 3, Follow Me! - Practice following directions through music and games. Early learners will participate in songs such as, "The Hokey Pokey," "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" and "Going on a Bear Hunt" to become active listeners.
  • Baby+Co., our August program sponsor, is partnering with the Museum to offer a series of information sessions for moms and moms-to-be throughout the month. Chat with a midwife, grow your motherhood community or help little ones adjust to a new brother or sister. Click here to see upcoming sessions.
